FARMacy
The FARMacy WV pilot program was initiated in 2016 as a collaboration between a free and charitable community clinic in Wheeling, West Virginia and Grow Ohio Valley, an urban farming group also located in Wheeling. The collaboration came out of a joint concern for the health of the population of West Virginia which continues to lead the country to this day in chronic diseases such as type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, and obesity.
The idea is that "healthy food is medicine," and a healthy diet is the first method of both treatment and prevention of chronic disease. The program provides access to healthy food as well as education in nutrition and cooking skills in the nutrition deserts and food-insecure regions of West Virginia.
IHCWV has had the privilege to participate in FARMacy since 2022, offering a 10-week program to eligible patients. Although we hope to expand the locations where the program is offered, it is currently only available at our Harrisville and West Union campuses starting in June or July.
To learn more about our FARMacy classes or how to enroll, contact Chronic Care and Quality Data Coordinator, Mary Spencer at 304-643-4005. or visit https://farmacywv.com/
