The holiday season is often depicted as a time of joy, togetherness, and celebration. However, for many individuals, this festive period can also bring about feelings of stress, anxiety, and even sadness. The heightened expectations, social pressures, and financial strains associated with the holidays can take a toll on mental health.
Factors Contributing to Holiday-Related Stress Several factors contribute to the increased stress levels experienced during the holidays. These include: • Financial strain: The financial burden of gift-giving, travel, and holiday gatherings can cause significant stress, especially for those with limited financial resources. • Social obligations: The pressure to attend social engagements and maintain family harmony can lead to feelings of overwhelm and anxiety, especially for those who struggle with social interactions. • Unrealistic expectations: Societal portrayals of perfect holiday celebrations can create unrealistic expectations that can lead to feelings of inadequacy and disappointment. • Loss and grief: The holidays can exacerbate feelings of loss and grief for those who have lost loved ones or experienced significant life changes. • Loneliness and isolation: For individuals facing loneliness or isolation, the holidays can amplify feelings of sadness and disconnection. Protecting Mental Health During the Holidays Despite the challenges, it is important to prioritize mental health during the holidays. Here are some strategies to maintain emotional well-being: • Manage expectations: Set realistic expectations for yourself and your family. Focus on enjoying the meaningful aspects of the holidays rather than striving for perfection. • Communicate openly: Express your feelings and concerns to loved ones. Open communication can help alleviate stress and strengthen relationships. • Establish boundaries: Set clear boundaries regarding social obligations and spending limits. Don't feel obligated to attend every gathering or spend beyond your means. • Practice self-care: Prioritize self-care activities that promote relaxation and stress reduction. Engage in activities you enjoy, get enough sleep, and maintain a healthy diet. • Seek professional help if needed: Don't hesitate to seek professional help if you are struggling with persistent feelings of stress, anxiety, or sadness. RRHC has a whole team of dedicated mental health professionals who can provide support. We also offer the Sliding Fee Program to uninsured or underinsured individuals so you can get the help you need without having to worry about the cost. Remember, the holidays are about cherishing moments with loved ones and creating lasting memories, not about achieving perfection or conforming to societal expectations. Prioritize your mental well-being and allow yourself to enjoy the season in a way that feels authentic and meaningful.

Celebrating Rural Health Day: Honoring the Pillars of Rural Healthcare
Each year, the third Thursday of November marks National Rural Health Day (NRHD), a day dedicated to recognizing the unwavering dedication and tireless efforts of healthcare providers, communities, and organizations that serve the 61 million Americans who call rural areas home. This year, as we observe Rural Health Day on November 16, 2023, the theme aptly resonates, "Innovation in Rural Health Care Delivery," highlighting the transformative approaches that are shaping the future of healthcare in rural settings. Rural healthcare providers face unique challenges, from geographic barriers and limited resources to an aging population with complex health needs. Yet, amidst these hurdles, these dedicated individuals embody the true spirit of resilience and innovation. They embrace technology, foster community partnerships, and develop creative solutions to ensure access to quality care for their patients -- Ritchie Regional Health Center is proud to be among them. Celebrating the Power of Rural Rural Health Day is not just about acknowledging challenges; it's about celebrating the power of rural communities and the unwavering commitment of those who serve them. It's about recognizing the countless stories of rural healthcare providers who go the extra mile, who build personal connections with their patients, and who champion preventive care to promote healthier communities. Shining a Spotlight on Innovation This year's theme, "Innovation in Rural Health Care Delivery," underscores the remarkable advancements that are revolutionizing healthcare in rural settings. From telemedicine and telehealth services bridging geographical distances to mobile health clinics reaching underserved populations, rural providers are embracing technology to expand access and improve patient outcomes. Enhancing Rural Health Infrastructure While individual efforts are commendable, sustainable progress in rural healthcare requires a comprehensive approach that addresses systemic challenges. Investing in infrastructure, expanding broadband access, and fostering collaborative partnerships among healthcare providers, community organizations, and government agencies are crucial steps towards building a robust rural healthcare system. A Call to Action As we celebrate Rural Health Day, let us collectively commit to supporting the remarkable individuals and organizations that are the backbone of rural healthcare. Let us advocate for policies that address the unique needs of rural communities, and let us celebrate the innovative spirit that drives progress in rural healthcare delivery. Together, we can ensure that rural communities across the nation have access to quality, accessible, and innovative healthcare that empowers them to thrive. World Quality Day is a tribute to the individuals and organizations dedicated to upholding and elevating standards of quality. Spearheading our quality efforts at Ritchie Regional, is Chief Quality Officer, Wendy Cutright. Wendy is a dedicated professional who helps ensure that our services, and processes meet the highest standards of care, propelling our organization towards success. So today, on World Quality Day, we thank Wendy for all she does and for being a true ‘quality champion’. #WorldQualityDay #CelebratingExcellence #RRHC National Radiologic Technology Week (NRTW) is an annual celebration of the vital work of medical imaging and radiation therapy professionals in patient care and healthcare safety. It is observed during the week of November 8, commemorating the anniversary of the discovery of the X-ray by Wilhelm Conrad Roentgen on November 8, 1895.
Radiologic technologists (RTs) are essential members of the healthcare team. They use their skills and knowledge to create high-quality images of the body's internal structures, which can then be used by doctors to diagnose and treat a wide range of conditions. RTs are also known for their compassion and empathy. They often work with patients who are feeling anxious or scared, and they take the time to explain the procedure and answer any questions they may have. Ritchie Regional is fortunate to employ one of the best radiologic technologists -- Jill Williams! During NRTW 2023, we’d like to take a moment to appreciate all the hard work and dedication Jill puts into her job! Provisionally Licensed Professional Counselor, Lisa Fleak, joins Ritchie Regional Health Center to provide therapy services to patients ages 7 and older, in both Ritchie County and Wood County.
She earned a Bachelor of Science in Health Science from Bridgewater College in 2001. Later, she furthered her education by receiving a Master’s Degree in Mental Health Counseling from Marshall University in 2019. Since 1999, Lisa has worked in residential facilities with children, adolescents, adults, and geriatrics, serving individuals who have intensive needs with mental health, behavioral, and developmental disabilities. She has worked in a day treatment program that provided highly intensive special education services to students with emotional disabilities who needed a structured, therapeutic educational setting. She has also worked in an inpatient psychiatric setting with acute mental illness and has provided in-home services to families, offering temporary support to prevent and reduce reliance on out-of-home settings for youth. Lisa is currently accepting new patients and offers in-person appointments at RRHC Ellenboro School-Based Health Center (SBHC), RRHC Parkersburg South SBHC, and RRHC Jefferson Elementary SBHC. Telehealth appointments are also available. To schedule an appointment with her, please call 304-643-4005. As a reminder, RRHC accepts most insurance plans, including Medicaid and Medicare. The Sliding Fee Program, based on income level and household size, is available to uninsured or underinsured individuals. As another quarter ends, we asked our staff to nominate two employees who have gone above and beyond for RRHC and our patients.
