On June 1, 2022, the WVU Cancer Institute’s mobile lung cancer screening unit, LUCAS, visited Ritchie Regional Health Center’s Harrisville Campus. The 48-foot unit, equipped with state-of-the-art lung cancer screening technology, provides lung cancer screening and refers patients in need of a follow-up to facilities close to their home. Building upon the successful operations and infrastructure of the mobile mammography unit, Bonnie’s Bus, LUCAS is part of the WVU Cancer Institute Mobile Cancer Screening Program, which is focused on bringing cancer prevention services to underserved communities throughout the state.
Screenings are available to patients with private insurance, Medicaid, or Medicare. Uninsured patients living in West Virginia, who are age 50 and older and meet lung cancer screening eligibility requirements, may receive lung cancer screening on LUCAS through the generosity of grant funding and donations. With regular lung cancer screenings, cancer may be detected earlier, when it is easier to treat and cure. More West Virginians die from lung cancer than colorectal, prostate, and breast cancer combined. Approximately 120,000 West Virginians are eligible for lung cancer screening, but only about two to four percent of those eligible for low dose computed tomography (LDCT) are currently being screened. Most West Virginia counties do not currently have access to LDCT in their area. The WVU Cancer Institute Mobile Cancer Screening Program is coordinated by Cancer Prevention and Control, and is a partnership between the WVU Cancer Institute and WVU Medicine-WVU Hospitals. For more information, contact Cancer Prevention and Control at 304-293-2370 or 877-287-2272 (toll-free), or email [email protected]. Ritchie Regional is looking forward to LUCAS' return in September when it will be providing lung cancer screenings to patients in West Union. May 27, 2022, declared as “Don’t Fry Day” by the National Council on Skin Cancer Prevention and its broad coalition of member organizations, encourages sun safety awareness and reminds everyone to protect their skin by taking ‘small steps to sun safety’ while enjoying the outdoors. To show our support for the campaign, RRHC handed out sunscreen packets to patients.
Skin cancer is the most common type of cancer in the nation, with almost 5.5 million cases diagnosed in Americans each year – more than breast, colon, lung, and prostate cancers combined. In fact, 1 out of every 5 Americans will be diagnosed with some form of skin cancer in their lifetime. Skin cancer is highly preventable. Over 90% of all skin cancer is caused by exposure to ultraviolet radiation from the sun or indoor tanning devices. Americans can dramatically reduce their risk of skin cancer by: • Not burning or tanning intentionally – no tan is a safe tan • Generously applying sunscreen (remembering to reapply every two hours) • Wearing sun-protective clothing • Seeking shade during peak times of the day • Using extra caution near water, snow, and sand Remember, if you notice an odd or discolored spot on your skin, RRHC’s medical providers are happy to exam it and make the necessary referral! Don’t wait! Call or text 304-643-4005 for an appointment. For more a complete list of RRHC Locations/Hours, please click here. Learn more about skin cancer prevention here.
RRHC would like to thank everyone for their understanding as we closed all our sites early May 12, 2022 for an employee outing to the Valley Gem Sternwheeler in Marietta, Ohio. It was truly a privilege to treat our employees to lunch and spend quality time with each other. After all, RRHC employees are more than employees, they are family!
Although not every team member could make it to the event, we had a wonderful time and would like to share pictures of our incredible RRHC Family!
